Indian Agent/Principal/Teacher

Neil Gilmour started working in residential schools as a teacher. He first started teaching at Regina Industrial school in 1892 at the age of 25, and by all accounts, he was a great teacher. In a report dated June 1892, A. J. Mcleod, principal of the Regina Industrial School had this to say about Gilmour:

“… we secured the services of an efficient and enthusiastic assistant and teacher, Mr. Neil Gilmour. Under his management, gratifying results show themselves in the school-room”

He taught at Regina Industrial School for close to two years before being promoted to Principal of Birtle Boarding School. While principal of Birtle Gilmour was also in charge of all the teaching. His time at Birtle further showed his effectiveness and commitment to the education of indigenous children. He started the first music program at Birtle because he believed that learning music is important to a good education. A report in 1895 described his teaching style:

He is a kind and patient teacher and the discipline in the schoolroom was well maintained without harshness.”
